The National Usercane Center (NUC) is an official group of the Hypothetical Hurricanes Wiki that is responsible for tracking Atlantic usercanes. The center is responsible for routinely issuing weekly advisories for active usercanes according to the year that they formed in, as well as organizing records on these systems.

The NUC was founded as a branch of the Bob Nekaro Weather Center (BNWC) on January 1, 2016. Since December 2016, the entity was privatized and merged with the former HMC Usercane Center, and has seen many leadership changes in its history. Currently, the agency is led by Hypercane, a former wiki leader who assumed presidency after the NUC went on an abrupt hiatus in early 2023.

History[]

On December 31, 2015, the Bob Nekaro Weather Center announced that it would begin tracking usercanes effective January 1, 2016. Beginning with the formation of Tropical Depression One (later Tropical Storm Destiny, which was declassified) on January 5, 2016, the BNWC began tracking usercanes on an irregular basis with no consistent advisory schedule. In April 2016, BNWC expanded their usercane operations to cover all usercanes, resulting in many other usercane prediction centers being opened. After the expansion, this branch became known as the National Usercane Center (NUC).

Beginning on May 20, 2016, the BNWC began issuing weekly usercane advisories on Fridays at 11:00 PM EDT. These advisories were consistently done on Fridays in order to come up with a simpler way of calculating accumulated usercyclone energy (AUE). Intermediate advisories, if necessary, were issued on Tuesdays at 8:00 PM EDT (11:00 PM EDT from June through August). Advisories were released on a fairly consistent basis from May to August, but they were temporarily suspended in early September. NUC resumed service with a new design on December 16, 2016.

The NUC later disconnected from the BNWC in December 2016, and it became a separate entity when it merged with the now-extinct HTMC Usercane Prediction Center. In early 2017, Hypercane left the NUC and started the HTMC Usercane Center. At the time, the NUC's advisories were suspended temporarily until July 2017. founder Bobnekaro resigned from his position as president and gave the position to Cooper7579. After Cooper's resignation, the authority of the NUC was entrusted to Sassmaster15. Subsequently, the agency went through a major overhaul until Sass went inactive in mid-2022. No jobs were assigned to the staff at the NUC, which would later lead to a complete shutdown of the agency until October 2022.

After its revival, the agency went through multiple role changes and new roles. FCX became a Vice President, while Finolian (commonly known as Alex) received a promotion to Senior Forecaster. This is the newest role of the National Usercane Center. However, in December 2022, Hypercane left his position as president and left the NUC. FCX decided to take over the NUC and promote Solaris to Vice President.

List of positions[]

Please note that to apply to become a member of the NUC staff, you should have Discord as this will be the primary means of communication. If there is an extenuating circumstance where you are unable to use Discord, please let us know. You do NOT need to be an HHW administration member to apply!

The NUC is proud to announce that a variety of positions are available to users interested in helping out with NUC operations. Please see the descriptions below to decide what position you are interested in applying for:

  • Managers: Managers are the NUC's executives and help the president maintain and control the organization's operations. They are responsible for updating, issuing, and enforcing the weekly forecasting schedules (i.e., assigning forecasters for each time period and ensuring that all periods are covered, as well as finding a cover for a forecaster in the event that they are unable to issue their forecast for the week). They will also delegate tasks to staff as necessary and serve as backup forecasters for the time period of their choice.
  • Forecasters: No meteorological agency can survive without the fundamentals—the team of hurricane specialists and forecasters! Forecasters issue weekly advisories on all active usercanes within their area of responsibility. A forecaster's area of responsibility is their assigned time period for each usercane season (for example, a forecaster's area of responsibility may be to issue advisories on all active usercanes within the 2012-2014 usercane seasons). In general, the forecaster's area of responsibility will be around the time they joined (for example, the forecaster for all 2015 usercanes would most likely be a user who joined in 2015). If there are multiple forecasters for the same time period, they will rotate each week as determined by the NUC's manager.
  • Track & Season Maker: These staff members have the responsibility of making and updating tracks for all current and past usercanes. In addition, these staff members are also responsible for maintaining and updating the corresponding usercane seasons within their area of responsibility. Like forecasters, the Track/Season Makers' area of responsibility will be a designated time period (such as 2012-2014) and will likely maintain an area of responsibility corresponding to the time they joined HHW.
  • Record Keeper: The records keeping team has the responsibility of ensuring the proper information is reported on all usercane seasons, advisories, and corresponding pages. This includes the records page. In addition, they will conduct post-season analysis on all dissipated or extratropical usercanes, analyzing their intensities at various points in time and issuing tropical cyclone reports for these storms. They are to report the findings of their TCRs to the track and season-making team to ensure that tracks and usercane seasons are accurate and up-to-date.
