Hurricane Leslie was the deadliest hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, as well as the costliest and deadliest tropical cyclone in Jamaican history. The twelfth named storm and seventh hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, Leslie formed from a tropical wave in the western Caribbean Sea in mid-October. Favorable conditions allowed Leslie to strengthen, and while south of Jamaica it peaked as a Category 2 hurricane before making landfall there at peak intensity. Leslie weakened as it crossed Jamaica, but was still a high-end Category 1 hurricane when it made landfall in Cuba. Afterward, Leslie rapidly weakened to a tropical storm and passed through the Bahamas. Leslie continued to accelerate eastward until it was absorbed by a cold front on October 18.

The storm caused at least 267 fatalities in Jamaica alone, as well as an additional 182 fatalities in southeast Cuba. Two indirect fatalities were also caused by electrocution in the Bahamas. Leslie also caused over $1 billion in damages in Santiago De Cuba province. The storm's outer rainbands also caused severe flooding in western Cuba, which despite not being directly impacted by the storm suffered over $2.5 billion in damages from flooding.

Meteorological history[]

A weak tropical wave left the west coast of Africa on October 6. Due to a mid-level ridge to its north, the wave progressed across the tropical Atlantic in a westward motion. The wave remained disorganized due to moderately strong vertical wind shear over the tropical Atlantic. As it approached the Windward Islands, the wave began to organize.
