Near extinction of Goombas

The Goomba species nearly went extinct as a result of Hurricane Gina. At one point there were only five Goombas left in the entire SMG4verse. However, due to conservation and rescue efforts, the number of Goombas has greatly increased between 2005 and 2008. As of 2018 there are more than 500,000 Goombas in the SMG4verse. However, the number of Goombas will likely never return to it's number before Gina's landfall.

Due to the massive death toll and extreme destruction, the name Gina was officially retired in the Spring of 2006 and will never again be used for a Mushroom Kingdom hurricane. The name was replaced by Grace for the 2011 season.
