Hurricane Dana is an extremely destructive hurricane that devestates Florida, Louisiana and other areas. It caused major damage in the Bahamas and Louisiana, but the greatest impact was in South Florida, where it made landfall at Category 5 hurricane intensity on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane scale, with wind speeds up to 165 mph (300 km/h). Passing south of Miami, Andrew obliterated entire blocks of homes, in many cases leaving only the concrete foundations. Over 40,000 houses were destroyed in Miami-Dade County alone, and nearly 100,000 more were severely damaged. 132 people were killed and the damage total across the affected regions exceeded $50 billion (1992 USD). Damage was also widespread in Bahamas, with $2 Billion is in Bahamas alone. Despite not directly striking Cuba, it still did a lot of damage and in Hispaniola as well. Due to the damage done, the name Dana was retired and Deborah replaced it for 1998.

Meteorological History[]

Hurricane Dana (1992)

Map plotting the track and intensity of the storm according to the Saffir–Simpson scale

A tropical invest was spotted near Cape Verde and eventually become Tropical Storm Dana. It become a hurricane and intensification happened. Instead of passing into Caribbean Sea, Dana went northwest and warm waters allowed Dana to become a Category 5 hurricane. Dana avoided making landfall on Cuba or Hispaniola, but it instead aimed into Florida. Later it reached max winds of 325 kph and 886 mbar, making it one of the most intense hurricane. It makes landfall on Florida at Category 5 and weakened into Category 4. It again makes landfall and it further weakened and become extratropical.

Preperations and Impact[]

Hurricane Andrew (1992)

Dana making landfall on Florida

Hurricane warnings and watches are strictly observed starting Caribbean. When Dana intensified, many people evacuated, most are in Florida. Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama are also prepared in any scenario that may happen.

Starting at Bahamas, the storm caused mass storm surge that reaches 4 m and destroyed many buildings there. Florida was heavily affected by the storm. It causes mass storm surge reaching 3 m. Many tornadoes are also spawned. When it makes lanfall for second time, it causes again a lot of damage, and heavy winds are observed. The highest wind gust is recorded at Perrine, Florida reaching 315 kph. Total damage is amounted to $50 billion and deaths are about 132.

Retirement[]

After the season had ended, the World Meteorological Organization's RA IV Hurricane Committee retired the name Dana from the Atlantic tropical cyclone naming lists and replaced it with Deborah The name Dana will never again be used for an Atlantic hurricane.

Comparison to Danielle and Delta[]

Almost all of these three storms are category 5, very intense and affected the Gulf Coast. The three storms are referred by most people in the Gulf as D3. Later in 2007, Dorian also affects the Gulf Coast. Soon people added it to D3 and become D4. The term was made in 1995 after Delta affects the Gulf coast.
