Hurricane Arlene[]

Hurricane Arlene was the first named storm of the 2017 season, forming on May 31, a day before the official start of the

season. On June 2, Tropical Storm Arlene clipped Cancun with winds of 50 knots, with no reported fatalities. Due to this land interaction, Arlene degenerated into a tropical depression, but soon reintensified into a tropical storm, and later a minimal hurricane. However, it hit an area of shear, and degenerated into a tropical storm. On June 5, Arlene made landfall around the Cedar Keys area with winds of 55 knots, and rapidly degenerated into a wave on the 6th. All in all, Arlene caused isolated heavy rain and mudslides in Cuba, Mexico, and Florida. Arlene caused an estimated $150 million USD across its path, yet no fatalities, most likely due to lots of advance notice for the affected areas.

Tropical Storm Bret[]

Tropical Storm Bret was the second named storm of the season, forming on June 18, and performing a cyclonic loo

Bret.

p around Andros Island before intensifiying into a tropical storm and landfalling for the first time on Grand Bahama Island. Bret then paralelled the Florida coastline, causing minimal gusty winds and moderate rain from the Orlando area up to Jacksonville, before making landfall around Savannah as a moderate tropical storm with sustained winds around 50 knots. Bret then traveled inland for a considerate amount of time, before dissipating into a convectionless cloud swirl. Ultimately, Bret caused 2 fatalities in the Bahamas (both indirect) and 3 in Georgia (1 direct, 2 indirect). Also, it caused about $125 million USD.

Extratropical Storm 01[]

Extratropical Storm 01 was a widely disputed storm. On June 24th, Bret's remnants began to draw hot air off

Lake Huron. Soon after, Bret's remnants organized into an extratropical depression, which the NHC designated as EX-01. EX-01 then drifted across Lake Huron, and briefly achieved tropical storm status, almost immidiately striking Manitoulin Island as a minimal tropical storm with winds of around 40 knots. Because of this, EX-01 rapidly degenerated into a wave, which went on to cause minor damage in the Sudbury area. EX-01 caused roughly $50 million in damages. 2 fishermen drowned because when their boat capsized, which were the only fatalities reported.
