The Chapsteck Hurricane Center (CSHC) is a non-profit hurricane center based in Las Vegas, NV. The center had no formal capabilities until late 2017, when it took charge of naming and forecasting polar cyclones that form in the Pacific outside of the Alaskan Arctic or northern Russian seas, each currently the responsibility of the HTMC and CMC respectively. The center considers June 15 to mark the date of transition between one seasonal year to another.

Scale determining the status of a cyclone (OLD)[]

This scale determines and lists the nature of a hurricane. (i.e. extratropical)

  • Extratropical: Connected to a front, etc.
  • Subtropical: Extratropical and tropical characteristics.
  • Tropical: Forms over a low pressure center and is created by large amount of evaporation.
  • Supertropical: Very rare, has some characteristics of a tropical and hypertropical cyclone.
  • Hypertropical: Very rare, usually dissipates naturally and is mostly persistent by taking energy from other lows in the atmosphere. Can also create fronts.

Other:

  • Distropical: Extremely rare, forms when two high pressure points sandwich a cyclone. A cyclone lasts a very short time while distropical.
  • Multitropical: Extremely rare, is a bound state between a tropical and an extratropical cyclone.
