The 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season was a slightly below average hurricane season. It was the least active since 2015, following a slew of active seasons from 2016-2020. Thirteen tropical cyclones formed this season, with twelve of them being named storms. Seven became hurricanes and 2 became major hurricanes. The season officially began on June 1st and ended on November 30th, however, storm formation can occur anytime of year, as shown by the formation of Tropical Storm Ana in early May.
In early May, Tropical Storm Ana struck the coast of South Carolina. On May 6th, an area of low pressure developed over the Bahamas. Two days later, the system developed into the first tropical depression of the year. Within a few days, the depression had strengthened into a tropical storm. Ana would go on to be a moderate tropical storm, landfalling in South Carolina, causing mainly mild damage, including a few tornadoes in North Carolina.
