Hurricane Arlene

Category 2 hurricane (SSHWS)
Bob
DurationJune 8 – June 14
Peak intensity105 mph (165 km/h) (1-min) 968 mbar (hPa)

On the second week of June, a tropical disturbance begun to develop as it moved stationary near Jamaica. On June 8, the RECON found it to have a closed circulation and 35 MPH winds so they upgraded it to Tropical Depression One, as it still sat about 55 miles SW of Jamaica. Favorable conditions helped it strengthen into Tropical Storm Arlene later that day, as it started to gain speed. It strengthened some more and made landfall in Western Cuba the next day, with winds around 60 MPH. Minor damage up to $32 million USD with one death was confirmed in Cuba. Little weakening occurred and by June 10, Arlene has emerged over the Florida Straits and made landfall near Key West FL later that day with winds around 65 MPH before making a second landfall near Naples FL with winds around 70 MPH. Minor to moderate damage was reported, mostly confined to downed power lines and power outages, amounting up to $62 million USD with 4 deaths reported in the state. Emerging into the western Atlantic waters with winds around 65 MPH, on June 11, it started to rapidly strengthen into a category two that same day as it raced towards North Carolina where it made landfall the next day as a higher-end category one. Significant damage amounting up to $566 million USD, mostly from storm surge, and 9 deaths was reported. Inland flooding killed another one in Virginia, and one person died from high surf off The Bahamas. A total of 17 deaths were confirmed with an estimated damage total of $660 million USD.
