The 2011-12 European hurricane season is an annual event in tropical cyclone formation. The hurricane season began on October 15, 2011 and will end on April 15, 2012. The European Hurricane Center (EHC) in Berlin, Germany, names and issues advisories on storms. On average, 16 storms and 9 hurricanes form each year. In an event where tropical cyclones from the Atlantic basin crossover into the European region, the cyclone will retain its National Hurricane Center name.

Storms

Tropical Depression One

Tropical depression (SSHWS)
Counterclockwise vortex
Duration October 4 – October 7
Peak intensity 35 mph (55 km/h) (1-min)  1001 mbar (hPa)

On October 2, an elongated area of thunderstorms moved northwards from Africa and two days later, developed into a tropical depression. The depression was originally expected to become a tropical storm, but maintained intensity until October 7 when it dissipated due to strong wind shear.

Tropical Storm Arno

Tropical storm (SSHWS)
Counterclockwise vortex
Duration October 21 – October 29
Peak intensity 70 mph (110 km/h) (1-min)  987 mbar (hPa)

A very deep low pressure area, known as Odysseus, became tropical and was designated Tropical Storm Arno, and 02R by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) on October 21. By the time it became tropical, it had weakened to 987 mb. The EHC continued to follow the storm and issued tropical storm warnings for the Bay of Biscay coastline. Arno made landfall on October 28 and rapidly weakened before dissipated the next day.

Tropical Depression Two

Tropical depression (SSHWS)
Counterclockwise vortex
Duration November 18 – November 19
Peak intensity 35 mph (55 km/h) (1-min)  1008 mbar (hPa)

After three weeks of inactivity, the EHC had noticed an area of intense thunderstorms in the Adriatic Sea. A Windstorm Hunters pass on November 18 had found that the disturbance had a closed circulation with surface winds at 35 mph. Soon after, the EHC upgraded the system to a tropical depression. As it moved southwest it did not strengthen further and made landfall on Italy on November 19 and dissipated rapidly.

Hurricane Bob

Category 3 hurricane (SSHWS)
Counterclockwise vortex
Duration December 4 – December 7
Peak intensity 115 mph (185 km/h) (1-min)  949 mbar (hPa)

An area of low pressure moved into the EHC's area of responsibility on December 3 while showing near subtropical characteristics. By December 4, an ASCAT pass revealed that the strongest of the winds were located very close to the center. This prompted EWC to upgrade the low pressure area into a tropical storm, naming it Bob
