The 1990 Atlantic Hurricane Season is a very active season, with 20 storms forming. The season officially began on June 1, 1990, and lasted until November 30, 1990.
It is a very active season. It featured a lot of strong storms with the major hurricanes being record 9, and become the season with the most amount of major hurricanes, braking 1980's record.
The four destructive storms: Bertha, Hortense, Rene and Teddy, affected different areas in the Atlantic. Bertha caused heavy rainfall in Central America, and worst to strike since Rafael of 1988. Hortense caused landslides and a number of deaths in Mexico. The storm crossed into Pacific basin and was renamed Lowell. Rene caused torrential rainfall in many areas, stretching from Caribbean into Mexico. Due to strength of the storm, Rene caused catastrophic damage mostly in Caribbean. Teddy hits Florida as a Category 4, causing catastrophic damage.
Other storms aren't much destructive, but strong. Ike was forecast to become strong and affect Caribbean as a strong hurricane, but wind shear weakened Ike. Ike caused minimal effects. Klaus and Lili are also threatening, but caused minimal effects on any landmass. Paloma caused heavy winds in Azores and caused minimal effects. Sheila posed a threat to Bermuda, and caused some damage and heavy rainfall but not as severe as other storms
Here are the storm names used in the 1990 season. The names not retired will be used again in the 1996 season. This is the same list used in 1984 except for Ike and Sheila, which replaces Isidore and Sally. The names Ike and Sheila were used for the first time while Wilfred wasn't used in this season.
