The 1987 Atlantic Hurricane Season is an active season, with 17 storms forming. The season officially began on June 1, 1987, and lasted until November 30, 1987.
It has an average start, and Arlene, the first storm of the season, is a rare May hurricane. Dennis causes moderate damage as it enters landmass. One unusual fact that Dennis does not weaken much over land after it made landfall. Emily causes swells on Bermuda and Azores island and even reaching effects as far as Spain. Jorge causes heavy rainfall on Yucatan Peninsula.
Ophelia, the strongest and most destructive hurricane of the season, become the worst Dominican Republic hurricane since Danielle. It also ravaged Bahamas and Haiti with major hurricane force winds. Philippe ravaged Florida and Yucatan with hurricane force winds, causing mass evacuations. It ended up causing more than a billion dollar of damage. Rita, the last storm of the season, threatens areas which are already affected by Philippe. Fortunately, Rita is weakened by strong wind shear after becoming a major hurricane. Rita ended up making landfall as a tropical storm. There were relatively minimal damage associated with Rita.
Here are the storm names used in the 1987 season. The names not retired will be used again in the 1993 season. This is the same list used in 1981 except for Franklin, Jorge, Lee and Tracy, which replaces Floyd, Jose, Lenny and Tammy. The names Franklin, Jorge and Lee were used for the first time while Tracy wasn't used in this season.
